How to Pack and Seal a Roll Top Dry Bag Properly
A roll top dry bag has no zip, no valve and no moving parts, which is exactly why it works and exactly why most soggy disappointments are self inflicted. The bag can only be as waterproof as the person rolling it. Here's how to pack and seal one so the waterproofing you paid for actually gets delivered, learned the damp way so you don't have to.
The packing order: heavy low, precious middle, soft top
Pack a dry bag like you're building a small fortress. Heavy, robust things go in first so they sit at the bottom: shoes, wash kit, a filled water bottle. The middle is the safest real estate in the bag, so that's where anything precious lives, ideally inside its own small sealed pouch (phones get two barriers, always). The top layer should be soft: a towel or a fleece, because the top of the load is what the roll presses against, and soft kit lets the folds close tight and even.
Two packing habits that quietly ruin seals. First, hard corners near the opening: a shoe or a box edge poking into the roll zone creates a channel water will find. Second, overfilling. The seal needs a clear third of the bag's height free to roll, which is why buying a size up is the single best dry bag decision you can make. If you're fighting to close it, it isn't closed.
The three fold seal, done properly
- Squeeze, don't vacuum. Press the sides gently to push out the bulk of the air, but leave some in. A little trapped air is your friend: it makes the bag float and cushions the contents.
- Bring the stiffened edges together cleanly. The plastic strip along the opening should line up flat, with no fabric bunched between the two sides. A creased first fold is a leak wearing a disguise.
- Roll down tightly, minimum three full folds. Three is the number where the bend becomes something water can't climb through. Four is better on a big bag. Each fold should be snug against the last, not loose loops.
- Clip the buckle and give it a tug. The buckle isn't the seal, the folds are; the buckle just stops the folds unrolling. If the roll loosens when you tug the handle, unroll and start again.
Sand is the invisible saboteur here. A few grains caught in the folds hold the layers apart just enough to let water wick through, so on beach days, brush the opening clean before you roll. Salt does slower damage, stiffening the fabric over seasons, and the fix is a ten second freshwater rinse when you get home, easily done with the shower water you brought anyway.
The float test: your instant seal check
A properly packed and sealed roll top floats high and confident, because the trapped air has nowhere to go. So before you trust a bag on the water, test it in calm shallows or the bath: push it under, let it bob up, and check the contents. Dry means your technique is sound. Damp means revisit the folds, and better to learn it in the bath than mid capsize. It's the same two minute test we recommend for checking what your bag can survive, and once your roll passes it, it'll pass it every time, because the technique is the whole game.
One last habit worth building: pack the bag the same way every time. When the towel is always on top and the phone pouch always in the middle, you can find things with cold wet hands without unpacking the lot, which future you, dripping in a car park, will deeply appreciate.
